William Penn Goes East for Doane Invite

Crete, Neb.–The Statesmen cross country teams were back in action Saturday, competing at the Dean White Invitational hosted by Doane College.
The William Penn men placed fifth out of seven teams with 145 points, while Northwestern took the crown with 27 points. The women placed eighth out of nine teams at 211 points, while host Doane claimed the top spot with 19 points. Six of the top nine runners in the women’s field were from the host squad.
Doane’s Jake Kment was the first collegiate runner to cross the line in the 8K men’s race with a time of 26:27, and Jessa Sughroue of Doane earned the win in the 5K women’s competition in 19:17.
Deane Wichelt (Jr., Durant, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) guided the Statesmen men by placing 24th out of 68 runners with a time of 28:33.
Nick Thomas (Jr., Salmon, Idaho, Physical Education) finished in 35th at 29:27, and Blake Washington (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Public Accounting) finished right behind him in 42nd at 30:00.
Quintin Marshall (Sr., St. Louis, Mo., Computer Science) finished in 45th place with a time of 30:13. Dustin Ewalt (Fr., Clinton, Iowa, History/Government) came in immediately after him in 46th with a time of 30:21. Jeremy Mooney (Fr., Clinton, Iowa, Physical Education) rounded out the varsity in 54th with a time of 31:24.
Carlos Lizama (Fr., Victorville, Calif., Undecided) had a time of 31:37, which was good enough for a 57th-place finish. Stepfon Williams (61st, 32:40) and Raphael Crisosto (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Undecided) (63rd, 32:47) ran for WPU as well.
Rosemary Bailey (Sr., Fayetteville, Ark., Communication) headlined the women in 24th place (67 runners) with a time of 21:25.
Finally healthy, Deja Lewis (Fr., Spring, Texas, Undecided) was second for the navy and gold, finishing 44th with a time of 22:37. Sade Myers (Sr., Honolulu, Hawaii, Elementary Education) was next in 49th at 23:01, while Lilly Walters (Fr., Boerne, Texas, Biology) and her time of 24:06 was good for 56th. Janet Kuskie (So., Grant, Neb., Public Accounting) rounded out the Statesmen women in 67th with a time of 31:40.
