William Penn Gives Up Two in Short Span

William Penn University Athletics

Oskaloosa–When William Penn and Mount Mercy met in men’s soccer action Saturday night, they were playing just a hundred yards to the south of last year’s meeting. That was about the only difference from the 2011 contest as the Statesmen again came up short 2-0 to their Midwest Collegiate Conference foe.

William Penn (4-5, 0-1 MCC) gave up both Mustang goals in a span of 4:02, just slightly longer than last year’s span of 42 seconds between goals.

A spirited Statesmen effort kept the defending conference co-regular season and tournament champions off the board through the first 59 minutes. Unfortunately, at exactly at the 59:00 mark, Mount Mercy (5-4-1, 1-0 MCC) broke through and then posted an insurance goal at 63:02.

William Penn was outshot just 13-7, in fact only trailing 6-5 in that department at intermission. Jeff Kelly (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Business Management) and Luis Islas (Jr., Boise, Idaho, History/Government) tallied a team-high two shots each, while Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) recorded four saves.

Next: William Penn stays at home Wednesday to host Waldorf in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
