Oskaloosa–The upset bid was just not to be Tuesday night as the Statesmen wrestling team was defeated by #1 Grand View 40-10 in dual-meet action.

The team’s top grapplers Joao Vicente (Fr., East Providence, R.I., Secondary Education), at 133 pounds, and Kyle Soderblom (So., Newton, Iowa, Biology), at 197 pounds, flexed their muscles in victories, but unfortunately the remainder of the squad was outmatched. All nine ‘contested’ matches finished as bonus-point wins.

William Penn (0-3) forfeited at 125 pounds to open the meet, but Vicente got the hosts right back in it with an 11-0 major decision victory over Tyler Emert.

The next six matchups were decidedly in favor of Grand View (15-1), however, as it picked up three major decisions, two falls, and one technical fall.

Soderblom stopped the hemorrhaging with a fall over Dalton Schutjer in a time of 6:20. He actually trailed 6-5 at that juncture of the third period, but caught the Viking wrestler in a scramble and took him to his back.

The evening ended with another technical fall victory by Grand View.

Next: William Penn travels to Des Moines Saturday to compete in the Grand View Invitational.
