William Penn Dominates Grand View in ‘Toilet Paper Game’

Oskaloosa, Iowa—The annual ‘Toilet Paper Game’ commenced inside the Penn Gymnasium as William Penn hosted its rival Grand View on Tuesday.

The Statesmen (9-1, 3-1 Heart) defeated the Vikings (3-4, 1-2 Heart) in spectacular fashion with a 30-point victory, 101-71.

After a 4-0 opening run by Grand View, the toilet paper rained down and covered the court as Karmari Newman (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) hit a deep three to give his squad its first points of the game. Grand View hit the technical free-throw but Dexter Hood (Sr., Tuscaloosa, Ala.) responded with another three ball to pull the Statesmen ahead 6-5. From there, the navy and gold failed to relinquish its lead and led by as many as 33 on a couple of different occasions in route to the win.

William Penn shot .507 as a whole while Grand View shot .384. The three’s were working in favor of the Statesmen as they shot .500 from long range.

Hood led the offensive charge for the home team as he poured in a game-high 27 points and logged seven rebounds. Newman was 4-7 from beyond the arc leading to 15 points, Brandon Faison (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) was on triple-double watch as he collected 12 points, nine boards, and five assists, and Q Cager (Jr., Hopkinsville, Ky., Wellness and Recreation) scored 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers.

Nathan Gehring (Jr., Waukee, Iowa) was solid once again, almost getting a third consecutive double-double finishing with eight points and nine boards.

The Statesmen outrebounded their opponents 53-42 and five players collected a steal.

“Always good to win the Toilet Paper Game. I didn’t think we played particularly well but we won.” said Head Coach John Henry, “Thank you to all the community members who came out tonight for giving us a large crowd with most of our students gone for the holiday.”

Next Up: William Penn will get a week off before continuing Heart of America Athletic Conference play next Tuesday on the road against Clarke. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm in Dubuque.
