Oskaloosa–A tie is rarely a desired result, but playing against a tough foe from its future conference the William Penn women’s soccer team earned exactly that with a 0-0 decision with Avila (Mo.) Wednesday.
The Statesmen (3-4-1) were outshot just 16-12 and weathered an early onslaught of offensive chances. The contest eventually evened out and actually went in strong favor of WPU in the second overtime as the Eagles (4-2-2) went a player down when one individual was whistled for her second yellow. Unfortunately, the navy and gold could not take advantage, but still came up with a positive result against a Heart of America Athletic Conference squad that finished 2013 with a 15-3-1 mark.
Alyce Correia (So., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) managed a team-high five shots, while Silvia Munoz (Jr., Paramount, Calif., Elementary Education) added three off the bench.
Kelly Button (Sr., Tucson, Ariz., Business Management) finished with eight saves in the tie.

The hosts slowly started to chip away at the deficit right before halftime when Milo Bruce-Burgess (Sr., Brockenhurst, England, Physical Education) got WPU on the board unassisted in the 39th minute.
Adrian Macias (Jr., Denver, Colo., Applied Mathematics) also scored unassisted at the 47:28 mark to make it a one-goal contest. Unfortunately, the remainder of the evening went to Avila (4-2-1) with tallies in the 63rd and 83rd minutes.
Austin Ryan (Sr., Parkersburg, Iowa, Business Management) paced the offense with three shots, while Mason Bandy (Sr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) recorded six saves Wednesday.
