A league title on the lanes ‘strikes’ it rich as the #6 story from 2013-2014.

After winning the inaugural Midwest Collegiate Conference title in 2011, the Statesmen men’s bowling team suffered through a two-year drought before hoisting the trophy once again on March 2.

The squad, which entered postseason action as the highest-ranked MCC program at #11 in the nation, made it known right away that it would not be denied for a third-consecutive season. Headlined by the top individual in qualifying (Drew Balta had a 233.2 average) and two other top-five finishers, WPU knocked down 9,615 pins. Clarke was in second, but well behind at 9,306 pins.

Only the top four teams advanced to knockout competition. It took the navy and gold five games to dispose of Mount Mercy 3-2, but that test only fueled the fire for the Statesmen as they pounded Clarke 4-1 in the finals.

#6 Performance of the 2013-2014 Year

An offensive onslaught by a women’s soccer player finds its way into the countdown at #6.

Then-sophomore Silvia Munoz had a ‘foot’ in nearly everything on September 8 as the Statesmen crushed Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) 6-1 for its second victory as part of a five-game winning streak.

Her day began by sending in a wonderful corner kick that got the scoring started in the 11th minute. Munoz then capped off WPU’s first-half tallies with back-to-back goals in the 13th and 26th minutes.

Her day finished one more assist in the 48th minute. William Penn’s six goals were the most for the program in the 2013 campaign. The squad ended the contest with a season-best 33 shots.

Her efforts, alongside three assists in a win over Friends (Kan.) earlier in the week, allowed Munoz to receive Midwest Collegiate Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors. All of her assists came from corner kicks.
