Powell’s 12th Place Tally Helps Penn Women at Major Tier 1 Tourney

Fairview Heights, Ill.–Samantha Powell (So., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS) had a strong showing to lead the Lady Statesmen bowlers at the National Collegiate Team Match Games Friday and Saturday.

As a team, Penn was 12th out of 28 teams with 9,766 pins in six regular games and 20 Baker games.

Lindenwood (Mo.) won the crown with 11,226 pins, defeating its next closest opponent, McKendree (Ill.), by 171 pins.  Kim Yioulos of Pikeville (Ky.) won the individual title with a 213.5 average (1,281 pins).

In the current collegebowling.com power rankings, McKendree and Lindenwood are #1 and #2, respectively (Penn is 25th).

Powell narrowly missed a 200 average, collecting a 199.0 clip in six games (1,194 pins) to finish 12th out of 187 competitors.  She ended Friday with a high game of 245.

Breanne Underwood (Sr., Treynor, Treynor HS) was right outside the top 20, placing 26th with a 190.8 average (six games).

Amanda Kilts (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Jefferson HS) and Kirstin Newberry (So., Holland, Mich., West Ottawa HS) joined their veteran teammates in the top 50, placing 39th and 48th overall.

Both bowled in all six games with Kilts averaging 181.2 pins and Newberry owning a 174.7 mark.

Amanda Edenholm (So., Marysville, Wash., Marysville-Pilchuck HS) averaged 175.3 pins in four games and Abigayle Wempen (So., Titonka, North Iowa HS) knocked down 148.0 pins per game in two starts.

Next: Penn has one final tournament before holiday break, traveling to Rock Island, Ill. for the Leatherneck Classic this Saturday and Sunday.

Foster Heads Statesmen Bowlers at Tough Tier 1 Tourney

Fairview Heights, Ill.–The Penn men’s bowling team had a disappointing showing on Thanksgiving weekend as it competed at the National Collegiate Team Match Games Friday and Saturday.

As a team, Penn was 23rd out of 36 teams with 9,858 pins in six regular games and 20 Baker games.

Robert-Morris (Ill.) won the team crown with 11,122 pins, holding off Purdue and its 10,984 pins.  T.J. Schmidt of Purdue won the individual title with a 229.7 average (1,378 pins).

Robert Morris is ranked second in the latest collegebowling.com power rankings, while Purdue is sixth (Penn is 24th).

Cameron Foster (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) was the best Statesmen roller Friday, holding a 193.7 average in six games (1,162 pins) to tie for 51st out of 239 competitors.

Sean Rangel (So., Omaha, Neb., Bellevue East HS) was on his heels, placing 55th with a 192.8 average in six games.

Drew Balta (Fr., Walford, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) bowled all six games as well, holding a 177.3 average.

Andrew Zaug (So., Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) tallied a 167.4 average in five games, while Piet Schaeffer (Fr., Livingston, Scotland, The James Young HS) averaged 177.5 pins in four games.

Next: Penn has one final tournament before holiday break, traveling to Rock Island, Ill. for the Leatherneck Classic this Saturday and Sunday.

Penn Women Split at Northwestern Classic

Orange City–The Lady Statesmen basketball team came away with a big win and a ton of confidence as it played twice at the Pizza Ranch Classic hosted by Northwestern Friday and Saturday.

Penn (5-4) opened the weekend by defeating Dordt 70-60 Friday before falling to #1 NAIA Division II Northwestern 88-64 Saturday.

The navy and gold had little turkey hangover Friday in knocking off the previously undefeated Defenders (6-1).  Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) led all players with a game-high 33 points (10-of-20 FG), but the rest of her squad struggled from the field, losing the shooting battle 35.3%-27.4%.

A feisty defense reconciled that, though, as Dordt was forced into 29 turnovers, leading to 23 Lady Statesmen points.

Penn was also sharp at the line, finishing the night 26-of-32.  Subbert made all ten of her charity-stripe throws.

Rachel Butler (Sr., Orange County, Calif., Cerritos CC) hit the double-digit mark as well with 11 points, while Sarah Martin (So., Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek HS) added seven and Orielle Thomas (Fr., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) managed six.

Five different players recorded two steals in the win.  Subbert and Carleigh Hobson (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) also tied three Dordt players with a game-high seven rebounds.

The Penn defense was again active Saturday against the top-ranked Raiders, forcing the host team into 23 turnovers (22 for Penn), but it was much too little as Northwestern (9-0) owned a 53.4%-34.3% shooting advantage.

The Lady Statesmen kept the deficit to single digits for 30-plus minutes until the Raiders put the matchup out of reach with a 9-0 run around the 8:00 mark to go up by 19 points.

Subbert had issues from the floor (5-of-24) in topping the team with 15 points, while Butler (13) and Hobson (11) also surpassed the plateau.  Butler finished one board shy of a double-double.

Samantha Darley (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC) posted seven points and Martin and Randi Olson (Jr., Federal Way, Skyline CC) ended regulation with six points apiece.  Martin dished out three assists as well, while Thomas stole five Northwestern passes.

Next: Penn returns to Oskaloosa for a long week of home games, beginning Wednesday as the Lady Statesmen open Midwest Collegiate Conference action against Waldorf at 5:30 p.m.

Penn Men 1-1 at Thanksgiving Tourney
Hastings, Neb.–The Statesmen cagers ended a long road trip by taking one of two contests at the Hastings Classic Friday and Saturday.

Penn (7-4) defeated host Hastings 69-68 Friday, but was then tripped up by Doane (Neb.) 76-66 Saturday.  The win over Hastings helped the Statesmen sweep the non-conference season series against the Broncos (3-7), also coming away with a 77-62 victory on November 12.

Friday’s contest went down to the wire with Penn holding on in the final seconds.  The Statesmen were outshot 43.4%-35.4%, but held a 44-38 edge on the glass.

Alan Douglas (Jr., Champaign, Ill., Lakeland CC) topped his squad with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Blake Walker (Fr., Smyrna, Ga., Campbell HS) joined the double-digit club with 13 points, while Ryan Wilson (Sr., Ballwin, Mo., Missouri-Kansas City) had nine and Deon Bergeron (Sr., Lake Charles, La., Grand Lake HS) contributed eight.  Wilson finished one board shy of matching Douglas with a double-double.

Huzie Hambrite (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind., Ball State) had three assists and A.J. Rogers (So., Patoka, Ind., Princeton HS) stole the ball twice.

Penn continued to play well for much of the Doane contest, leading 38-31 at the break.  Unfortunately, the lengthy road trip (seven games in 13 days) finally caught up to the Statesmen and they ran out of gas.  Penn was on the bottom side of a 49.1%-42.9% shooting battle.

Douglas again headlined his team’s scoring with 16 points, while Walker notched double figures with ten.

Nick Coffey (Sr., Hinsdale, Ill., Hinsdale Central HS) managed nine, while Hambrite and Ross Howe (Fr., State Center, West Marshall HS) posted eight each.  Bergeron tallied six in the loss.

Walker assisted on three buckets and Hambrite had four steals.

Penn’s 41 rebounds were one better than the 40 pulled down by Doane (6-2), leading to a significant 18-5 edge in second-chance points.  The Statesmen were just 4-of-11 from the line, while Doane tallied several more trips (15-of-26).

“We are all very relieved this road trip is over,” Statesmen Head Coach John Henry said.  “It was exhausting and that really showed in the second half against Doane.  They simply wore us down.  It will be nice to play at home for a few games and get ourselves back on track.”

Next: Penn returns to Oskaloosa for a long week of home games, beginning Wednesday as the Statesmen open Midwest Collegiate Conference action against Waldorf at 7:30 p.m.
