William “Bill” Greenhalgh, 82, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, August 19, 2019, at the Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born July 18, 1937, in University Park, Iowa, the son of William Buster and Dorothy Reinier Greenhalgh.

From ages nine to eighteen Bill looked forward to spending summers with his aunt and uncle Ernie and Wanda Bartenhagen and working on their farm in Muscatine.

Bill graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1956. Following graduation, Bill served in the United States Marine Corps. He entered the Marines in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1959.

On November 5, 1957, he was united in marriage to Mary Van Duren at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.

Early on Bill worked at Iowa Valve. After some time there, he went to work doing carpentry work in the Pella area. In 1960, the family moved to Phoenix where he continued to do carpentry work. In 1962 they moved to California and Bill worked for various contractors for eleven years. In 1973, they returned to Oskaloosa and he owned and operated Bill’s Carpentry for fifteen years. In 1988, he went to work for Musco, he retired from there in 2003 due to ill health.

Bill was an active member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa where he had served as an elder, a deacon, a sunday school teacher and a Cadet leader. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, traveling and woodworking. Bill was a devoted husband and family man, the Greenhalgh home was full of love and grace that was rooted in Bill and Mary’s deep faith in Jesus Christ.

His family includes his wife of over 61 years, Mary Greenhalgh of Oskaloosa; three children and their spouses: Carmen (& Tim) Briggs of Norwalk, Jeff (& Sheri) Greenhalgh of Oskaloosa and Kip (& Margie) Greenhalgh of Oskaloosa; ten grandchildren: Jesse Greenhalgh, Billy Goodman, Jason (& Diana) Briggs, Stacey (& Chad) Reeves, Kelsey (& Brandon) Cox, Zachary Greenhalgh, Megan (& Chadrick) Overholser, Nikki (& Eric) Kriegel, Sean Taylor, and Macy Taylor; thirteen great grandchildren: Nash and Paisley Reeves, Talan, Camden, and Adalyn Briggs, Chase and Kinsley Greenhalgh, Kale and Owen Cox, Rowyn and Rockston Taylor, Brooke (& Matt) Mahaffey, and C.J. (& Taylor) Russell; three great great grandchildren: and Layne Mahaffey, and Colby Russell; two brothers and their wives: Frank (& Judy) Greenhalgh of Oskaloosa and Gary (& Marilyn) Greenhalgh of Oskaloosa; a sister, Patricia DeHeer of New Sharon; a brother in law, Rick (& Luz) VanDuren of La Palma, California; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy; a sister in law, Sheryl Van Duren Amos; and a niece, Tiffany Morrison.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson and Mike Sereg officiating.
A family prayer service will be at 10:15 Saturday morning in the basement fellowship hall of the church.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Friday after 10:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Serenity House or Central Reformed Church Building Fund.
