Wilbur “Web” D. Vroegh, 82, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, October 7, 2021, under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice in Ottumwa. He was born July 31, 1939, in rural Eddyville, the son of Barendt “Ben” and Alberta Tukker Vroegh.

Wilbur graduated from Eddyville High School with the class of 1957.

On March 17, 1959, Web entered the United States Army. He was honorably discharged on April 5, 1962.

In February of 1963, he went to work for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washington D.C. In 1973 he took a position with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He started out in the Washington D.C. office and was later transferred to the Minneapolis and Detroit offices. Last he was asked to move to Chicago and open an office there for the Consumer Product and Safety Commission. He continued to work in Chicago until his retirement in May of 1994.

Wilbur was honored by the Federal Government for his 34 years of service in the government offices.

In retirement, he returned to Iowa and settled in Oskaloosa.

Web loved to look for antiques at flea markets and auctions. He and his good friend Mari Job were regulars at auctions and the What Cheer flea market. He was active with the EBF Alumni Association, he served in many capacities including President and oversaw his class reunions for many years. He looked forward to getting together with fellow EBF graduates and sharing stories from the past. Web loved Christmas, and his Christmas decorations were second to none, he always looked forward to having guests during the holidays to show off his tree and other decor.

His family includes a sister-in-law, Donna Vroegh of Eddyville; fifteen nieces and nephews; many great and great great nieces and nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings: Gysbert “Bert” Vroegh, Marie McDonough, Pearl Mae Sheets, Catherine McNeese-Cox, Bernice Steel-Heaton, and Clarence Vroegh; and six nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Monday, October 18, 2021, at 6 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Burdell Hensley officiating.
Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. at the Bates Funeral Chapel during the memorial service.
As was Wilbur’s wish his body has been cremated and burial of his cremated remains will be in the Highland Cemetery at Eddyville.
Visitation with the family present will be held Monday, October 18, 2021, from 3 p.m. until service time at 6.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the EBF School Alumni Association for Scholarships.
