Webb Wins Triple Jump as WPU Concludes Busy Week at CMU Invite

Fayette, Mo.–The William Penn men’s track and field team wrapped up a long two-meet week by competing at the Central Methodist Invitational Friday and Saturday.

John Webb (Fr., Dothan, Ala., Mechanical Engineering) guided the navy and gold by winning the triple jump event at 46-3.25. He was one of three Statesmen in the top five as Anthony Weaver (Fr., Demopolis, Ala., Mechanical Engineering) placed third at 44-10.75 and Micah Mills (Fr., Houston, Texas, Psychology) was fifth at 44-1.5.

Webb managed a strong showing in the 200-meter dash as well, taking eighth in 22.09 seconds, while Showalter Johnson (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas, New Media) guided William Penn in the competition in fourth place (21.80). Rayan Antonia (So., Willensted, Curacao, Business Management) also recorded a top-half effort (31st place) in the 200 at 23.59.

Tahj Ferguson (Sr., Hartford, Conn., Psychology) tallied WPU’s best 100-meter dash time, taking 17th in 11.32 seconds, while Bennett Polite (Jr., Kearney, Mo., Fine Arts) was 20th (11.39) and Antonia was 21st (11.40).

The 4×100-meter relay team crossed the line in fourth place in 41.85 seconds, while Jaden Loveless (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa, Industrial Technology) finished 16th in the 400-meter dash (52.56).

Ferguson guided a pair of top-10 long jump performances as the senior was sixth at 22-1.75 and Jalen Morris (Fr., Grimes, Iowa, Business Management) ended up 10th (21-0.5).

High jumper Kwabena Banahene (Fr., Fontana, Calif., Undecided) was near the top of the standings, taking fifth at 5-11.5.

Xzavion West (So., Guthrie, Ky., Undecided) topped the Statesmen throwers with a bronze in the hammer throw at 169-0. The sophomore was also seventh in the shot put (45-3) and 14th in the discus (110-1).

Nick Marshall (Jr., Glenpool, Okla., Human Services) placed himself in the top 10 on three occasions, highlighted by a fifth-place effort in the javelin at 157-2. He was eighth in both the shot (44-1.5) and hammer (161-0) as well.

Steven Murray (Sr., Missouri Valley, Iowa, Sociology) also performed strongly in three events, placing eighth in the discus (132-0), 11th in the shot (42-8.75), and 12th in the hammer (147-2), while Jeremiah Conteh (Sr., Shorewood, Wis., English) was ninth in the hammer (157-9) and 12th in the discus (117-3).

“The men are working on a lot of execution early in this outdoor season,” Head Coach Victoria Vinokur said. “They are really working on getting the technical aspects of their events down, in order to really start popping off later in the spring. We are seeing some really good things early on from them and it is going to be fun to watch them develop.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Dubuque next Saturday to compete in the Dubuque Mississippi River Rumble.
