Wayne Lee McMullen, age 83, of Oskaloosa, passed away on Monday, September 27, 2021, at Mercy One West in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born on July 1st, 1938, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Homer and Bernice (Moore) McMullen.

Wayne attended Oskaloosa High School and graduated with the Class of 1956. He later went on to earn his AA Degree.

On February 7, 1960, Wayne was united in marriage to Nancy Kay George in Oskaloosa. To this union 3 children were born, Merridy, Melody and Douglas. Wayne and Nancy later divorced. In December of 1997, he was united in marriage to Joyce Carruthers in Oskaloosa. Joyce passed away in November of 2015.

Wayne worked in construction for most of his life. He started his construction career at Hawkeye in Oskaloosa and later took a job at Morton Builders for 20 plus years. Wayne later went to work at Clow Valve in Oskaloosa. After a work injury forced him into early retirement, he and Joyce ran a stuffed animal vending machine business.

Wayne was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and in his younger years, trapping. He was also a member of Ducks Unlimited and participated in events at the Moose Lodge. During the last 10 years of his life, he really enjoyed discovering his family’s genealogy.

His family includes his two children, Merridy Cumpton and Douglas (fiancée Kim Pace) McMullen all of Kansas City, Missouri; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; his siblings: Gary McMullen of Oskaloosa, Bobby McMullen of Alaska, Terry McMullen of Eddyville and Phyllis Todd of Las Vegas.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce McMullen; a daughter, Melody Dorris; his parents, Homer and Bernice McMullen; and a sister, Betty Stewart.

A visitation will be held on Monday, October 4, 2021, at the Bates Funeral Chapel beginning after 3:00 p.m. with the family present Monday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel to greet friends and family. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa.
