PELLA—Finishing off its own tournament with a win, the Central College volleyball team held off Bethany Lutheran College for a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

Central (3-4) fell in five sets (20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 16-14) to Illinois College (6-1) in the first game of the day. The win over the Vikings (2-6) was scored 26-24, 28-26, 20-25, 25-21.

“We were pretty evenly matched with Illinois College,” coach Jeanne Czipri said. “I think we battled really well.”

“We’re giving away too many points with unforced errors. There were a lot of things we should have controlled better and we didn’t.”

Against the Vikings, Kayleigh Fite (sophomore, St. Louis, Mo., Trinity Catholic HS) got the start at right-side hitter and recorded eight kills and eight digs.

“Kayleigh came in and hit for a great percentage,” Czipri said. “She made some clean, defensive plays in serve receive.”

As an outside hitter, Landry Luhring (freshman, Grundy Center) had 27 digs between the two matches. Libero Hannah Tripp (sophomore, Eldora, South Hardin HS) had 36 digs against the Lady Blues and 18 against the Vikings.

“Defensively, Landry is making plays that we need to make, regardless of where she is playing,” Czipri said.

Krissa Larson (freshman, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) had 16 kills against Illinois College and 15 against Bethany Lutheran.

“She had two standout matches,” Czipri said. “Against Illinois College she only had four kills in the first two sets but finished with 16. She found ways to make things happen.”

Luhring had 15 kills against Illinois College while middle hitters Hana Edgerton (junior, Grundy Center) and Erin Dilger (junior, Tinley Park, Ill., Lincoln-Way North HS) had 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

The schedule picks up with a critical American Rivers Conference opener Tuesday night at Simpson College. That match will start at 7:30 p.m. in Indianola.
