Virginia Moore, 90, of Tama and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, October 6, 2019, at the Sunny Hill Care Center in Tama. She was born September 7, 1929, in Mahaska County the daughter of Charles Emory and Alice Marie Clayworth Stewart.

In high school she was a tenacious basketball player for Lacey. Her love of girl’s high school basketball stayed with her throughout life. She still looked forward to high school basketball season. She graduated from Lacey High School with the class of 1947. She continued her education at Iowa Teacher College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls earning her teaching certificate in 1949.

Following school, she took a job teaching in New Sharon and later Lincoln School in Oskaloosa.

On January 11, 1951, she was united in marriage to Edwin L. Moore in Oskaloosa. To this union they were blessed with two children, L.E. and Anita Marie.

She returned to teach at New Sharon in fall of 1958. Committed to education, she earned her bachelor’s degree in Education from William Penn College in 1963. She retired from teaching second grade at North Mahaska Elementary in 2000.

Along with teaching, she loved raising her children and helping on the farm. She was the foundation of her family, and the family was rooted in love, faith, and learning.

Virginia was a member of 4-H, showing cattle in her younger years. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church, where she previously was a Sunday School Teacher. She had a love for music, especially hymns. She enjoyed being recognized at the 100th year of girls basketball at the 2019, Iowa State Girls Basketball Tournament as one of the oldest Iowa Girls Basketball players. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, bird watching, tending to her cats, and was a lifelong avid learner who loved history, and enjoyed writing facts.

Her family includes her children, L.E. (& Sherrie) Moore of Rose Hill, Anita Marie Townsley of Toledo; two grandchildren, Allison (& Darvin) Graham, and Ashley (& Bradley) Warren; two great grandchildren, McLane and Edwin Warren; nephews, Steven (& Carma) Seitsinger of Rose Hill, Emory (& LeAnne) Stewart of Oskaloosa, and Alan (& Cindy) Stewart of Oskaloosa; a niece, Sandra (& Danny) Voss of Oskaloosa; and many friends and former students.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years Edwin on February 8, 1990; her parents; a brother, Albert Stewart; a sister, Anita Seitsinger; and a son-in-law, Charles Townsley.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 11, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Allison Graham officiating.
Burial will be in the Wymore Cemetery east of Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday, October 10, 2019 after 11:00 a.m. in Bates Funeral Chapel Oskaloosa. Family will be present at the funeral chapel from 5– 7 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to North Mahaska Girls Basketball.
