Violet was born April 17, 1920, in Spring Valley, Mahaska County, Iowa to Oscar German Stephen and Hettie “Maude” McCain Stephen. She grew up on her parents’ farm near Lacey, Mahaska County, Iowa. She graduated in 1938 from Lacey High School. On August 20, 1939, Violet was united in marriage to Earl William “Bill” Else in Kirksville, Missouri. She was an intricate partner with Bill on their farm in rural Cedar after they purchased and moved there in January 1941. Bill died April 16, 1975. Violet worked at restaurants in New Sharon and Oskaloosa. She was very involved in activities at Cedar United Methodist Church, Cedar Township/Mahaska County Farm Bureau and the A.R.T.E. club. She was well known for her outstanding service in various offices, speaker, District officer and precise minutes. Her excellent baking/cooking skills were noted community-wide. Some people called her “the cookie lady”.

Violet is survived by Marcella Phillips of Des Moines and Darrell (Patricia) Else of Norwalk; four grandchildren: Michael Phillips, Lynn (Larry) Burt, Christopher Phillips and Jason Else; two great grandchildren: Benjamin Phillips and Breanna Else; sister Sylvia Criss; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son Gary Else; grandson Craig Else; brother Gail Stephen; and three sisters: Blanche Knowler, Pauline Tice and Ruby Gerard.

Visitation: 1:00 P.M. one hour prior to the service . June 25, 2013 at Fremont Funeral Chapel

Interment: Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery (South) Fremont, Iowa
