Vernon Charles DeTar, age 81, of Albia, IA, passed away on Sunday, June 26, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, surrounded by his loved ones. Vernon was born on June 7, 1941, at home in Monroe County to William Nelson and Jessie Elizabeth (Bettis) DeTar.
Vernon grew up attending King and Maxon country school. He graduated from Albia High School with the class of 1959. He farmed with his father and later with his son, Stacy.
On October 20, 1963, he married Rebecca Susan Whitlock. To this union, 3 sons were born, Steven Charles, Scott Wayne, and Stacy Alan. They were also blessed with 8 grandchildren.
Vernon was a member of the former EUB Church and Trinity United Methodist Church. He was one of the founding members of the Happy Home Sunday School class. He took great pride in his sons and their families.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Becky; 3 sons: Steven Charles (& Niola) DeTar, Scott Wayne (& Brenda) DeTar, and Stacy Alan (& Vickie) DeTar; 8 grandchildren: Erin Niola, Susan Caridad, Peter John, David Joseph, Joshua James, Deven Alan, Colton Charles, and Elizabeth Marie; 2 nieces, Laura Whitlock and Debra House; 2 nephews, David Hutchinson and Randall Whitlock; and a sister-in-law, Linda Whitlock.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth Hutchinson and her husband, Wiley; his in-laws, George and Marie Whitlock; and a brother-in-law, Bert Whitlock.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Vernon’s family present from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. to greet family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, with Pastor Roger Henry officiating. Burial will follow services at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Monroe County.
A memorial has been established to the Trinity United Methodist Church or Albia FFA (Future Farmers of America) as Vernon was Chapter President and a lifetime member.
