Verna Sytsma, 91, of Oskaloosa died December 31, 2015, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. She was born December 19, 1924 in Harvey, the daughter of Thomas Wilson and Carrie Verros Clark.

Early on Verna worked at the old Continental Overall Factory in Oskaloosa.

On February 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to Forest Sytsma at Oskaloosa. Following their marriage, Verna stayed home to care for her family and home. Forest died December 29, 2008.

Verna enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens. She also enjoyed rooting for the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Verna is survived by her five children and their spouses: Duane (& Becky) Sytsma of North Liberty, Lonnie (& Gloria) Sytsma of Fremont, Sharon (& Larry) Wolver of Ottumwa, Dianne (& Larry) Eveland of Cedar Rapids, and Yvonne (& Mark) Mauer of Oskaloosa; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Leroy (& Carolyn) Clark of Oskaloosa; a sister and her husband, Luetta (& Don) Slagter of Pella; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband Forest, Verna was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Tim Sytsma; and a sister, Della Mae VanMaanen.

Funeral services for Verna will be held Monday, January 4, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend David Brown officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Sunday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 1-3 to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the MHP Hospice Serenity House.
