Veda Ewald, 81 of What Cheer died Friday, August 29, 2014 in Kansas City, Missouri. Veda Irene Ewald was born June 7, 1933 in Delta, Iowa the daughter of Glen and Jessie Davis Fear.

Veda attended school through the tenth grade and on June 7, 1949, at age sixteen, was united in marriage to Wayne Virgil Ewald. The couple started a family right away and assumed their life long positions on the Ewald Farm east of What Cheer.

Most of her working career, Veda was a full-time homemaker and farm wife. In the mid 80’s Wayne and Veda both accepted positions at the University of Iowa, where they worked until retiring.

Veda was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW, and the Rose Bud Club. She also volunteered her time at the Flea Market and serviced as a board member for the What Cheer Opera House.

She enjoyed dancing at the Odd Fellows in Ottumwa or in her own kitchen. Even with as very busy life Veda always made time for her family. Her selfless love for her family meant taking care of their needs and not her own. Veda’s door was always open and no one walked away from her table hungry.

Veda will be remembered as a great mother who was full of laughter and a grandmother who showed love and never had to say it.

Veda is survived by two daughters: Sandra Dellinger of Overland Park, Kansas and Shirley Ewald Cummins of Oskaloosa; six grandchildren: Quinten Brown, Jessikay Brown, Marina Dellinger, Irina Dellinger, Stacey Carrion and Anya Dellinger; seven great grandchildren: Hunter Brown, Logen Brown, Donovan Thompson, Libby Thompson, Alexander Ortiz, Mason Ortiz and Lukas Carrion.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wayne Ewald; four sisters: infant Eve Fear, infant Helen Fear, Thelma Keller and Wanda Thompson; and three of her most loyal friends: Maggie Mae, Sissy Sunshine and Shenandoah.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.
Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta.
Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday; family present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family to further support P O W organizations and the Diabetes Foundation.
