VanDerWal Breaks Through For SIS Win
by Jerry Mackey
Oskaloosa, Iowa: Wednesday night was DeJong Manufacturing Free Popcorn night at the races as night number three of the 23 season was contested at the Mahaska County Monster ½ mile dirt track on the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds in Oskaloosa.
The first two nights of the season have not produced the results that hometown favorite Curtis VanDerWal is used to having in the Oskaloosa Quality Rentals Sportmod division. Wednesday night belonged to the number 1V of VanDerWal as the green flag dropped for their main event and it was the 1V leading all 16 laps on the way to an impressive win. Maguire DeJong provided an early challenge before VanDerWal sped off to a comfortable win. Brayton Carter followed DeJong under the checkers in third.
Todd Reitzler continued his mastery of the Mahaska County Monster in scoring his second MidState Machine Stock Car win of the young season. Reitzler held back the constant challenges of Nathan Wood on Wednesday night to score the win. Jason McDaniel turned in a strong run in taking third.
A strong field of 22 Parker Tree Service Hobby Stocks took the green for their 14 lap feature event. Kale Hemsley led early while 10th starting Christian Huffman was steadily making his way to the front. Huffman was able to secure the lead as the feature race passed the midway point, but Huffman was forced to fight off a late race charge by Tyson Overton. In victory lane Huffman was informed that the feature payoff was nearly doubled as race enthusiast David Weeks added a sweet sum of $320 to the win making Huffman’s payday $720.
Shane Barnes scored his second win of 23 at SIS by topping the Dirt N Asphalt Sport Compact main event. Barnes took the lead early and went on score an impressive win over Garett Porter and Brandon Pickney.
Ben Woods added another trophy to his collection by topping the ten lap Clow Valve Company Non-Wing Sprint Car feature on Wednesday night. Woods took the win ahead of Nathan James and Doug Sylvester.
