MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. —The third tournament of the season for the Central College wrestling team presented an opportunity to get a lot of the underclassmen mat time at the Augsburg-Adidas Invitational on Saturday.

No team scores were kept at the tournament that included 19 teams. Central coach Eric Van Kley entered 31 wrestlers.

“We brought a really young team up here today,” Van Kley said. “It was good to get those guys some matches.”

Central did have a pair of juniors who placed in the top-tier gold brackets. At 141 pounds, Tristan Clark (Prairie City, PCM HS) used a first-round pin to propel himself to a fourth-place finish. Christopher Murino (Homer Glen, Ill., Lockport Township HS) went 2-2 and placed fifth in the 285-pound bracket.

“They set the tone for the day,” Van Kley said. “The showed a lot of toughness and every match was a battle.”

Out of the freshman class, Van Kley cited the performances of Griffen McBride (Pleasantville) and Hunter Ruth (Scranton, Greene County) in the silver bracket at 184 and 285 pounds, respectively. Both McBride and Ruth were the runners-up in their divisions.

“Those guys wrestled really well,” he said. “Each of them had three wins.”

Another junior, Lane Rumelhart (Guthrie Center) impressed Van Kley in the gold bracket at 174 pounds. Rumelhart went 2-2 and lost the consolation championship.

“He had a really good day,” he said. “He had a nice job of getting on his offense all day and had a solid tournament.”

A week off from competition due to Thanksgiving sets Central up for the first of two home duals before the New Year on Thursday, November 30 against Augustana College (Ill.).

“We’ve had a really solid first month overall,” Van Kley said. “There’s still a lot of things we’ve got to work on and improve. We’re excited about the start of the season and think it is something that we can really build on.”
