Hello Friends,

Even through extremely low temperatures, the Iowa Legislature and I have braved the cold and continue to keep at our work.

First, I want to thank everyone who came to the Eggs & Issues forum at Smokey Row this past Saturday. I appreciate meeting with you all to discuss issues and legislation that are important to our communities. It was a pleasure and I look forward to seeing you all again in future forums.

I started this week by meeting with some familiar faces from District 80, both constituents and my friends from the Rathbun Regional Water Association and Mahaska Rural Water System, Inc. during Water Day on the Hill. They, like other regional water associations across the state, came to the hill to speak with legislators about the challenges in providing clean water to the people of Iowa. I enjoyed meeting with them and discussing about their work in maintaining a high level of water quality for Southern Iowa.

On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of meeting the people from Decoding Dyslexia. Decoding Dyslexia is a nationwide organization led by parents who advocate for accessibility to resources and opportunities for kids who have dyslexia. As a parent of a child who has cognitive dyslexia, I understand the struggles many other parents face with their child’s education. As we met, we talked about the issues in accessibility to resources and programs for dyslexic children to allow for their academic success.

Finally, over this past week I have been given several leadership opportunities on various policy areas. In my committee meetings, I have been assigned the chair of three subcommittees (two in education, one in economic growth) that will be discussing current legislation up for passage. Between committee meetings, I have been working with the majority leadership to discuss the Governor’s proposed budget and the current conditions of the Iowa tax system so that both can best serve and inform Iowan citizens. While I have been working with others on their policy proposals, I will soon begin leading the charge on my first drafted bill, HF 184. This bill seeks to modify current law on the age eligibility for preschool programs. I believe this bill will be put to great effect allowing parents to get a leg up on their children’s education.

Again, it is an honor to be serving as a representative for Iowa District 80 and its constituents. If you have any questions about what is up for discussion in the House or any concerns you have over a particular piece of legislation, don’t hesitate to contact me.
