United Way of Mahaska County Funds Eleven Partner Agencies, Distributing $231,173
The decisions have been made and the first checks have been distributed. The United Way of Mahaska County has announced its 2014 Partner Agencies, local nonprofit groups who are working to improve the lives of Mahaska County residents.
2014 United Way of Mahaska County Partner Agencies are:

  • Agency on Aging
  • Crisis Intervention Services
  • Ecumenical Cupboard
  • Food Bank of Southern Iowa
  • 4-H Foundation
  • Imagine the Possibilities
  • Iowa Legal Aid
  • Love INC
  • Mahaska Hospice
  • SCIA Center for Independent Living
  • Mahaska County YMCA

“These agencies are doing amazing work in Mahaska County,” said Amy Langdon, Executive Director of the United Way of Mahaska County. “Their stories were very inspiring. We wish we could give them everything they asked for, but unfortunately, our dollars are limited. But I’m really proud of how the team made the tough decisions, working to help the most people in the most impactful way possible.”
Sixteen community members volunteered to serve on the Community Investment Team, reading grant applications, listening to agency presentations and ultimately giving their recommendations for how United Way funds should be distributed.
“We depend on community input to make sure we are being the best possible stewards of the money that Mahaska County has entrusted to us. We have everyone from bankers who take a hard look at agency financials to former nonprofit managers who know what it takes to really have an impact on the lives of those in need. Together, they make a very complete and informed recommendation to our board for approval,” said Langdon.
The mission of United Way of Mahaska County is to empower our community by promoting education, encouraging healthy living, and strengthening financial stability.
In addition to funding partner agencies, United Way of Mahaska County provides direct programs and services including VITA Tax Site, a local volunteer opportunities database – VolunteerMahaska.org, Day of Caring and Operation Backpack.
