Two Central seniors named league performers of the week

PELLA— The Central College men’s cross country and football team had senior athletes recognized as the American Rivers Conference performers of the week in their respective sports as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Daniel Sunvold (Monroe, Southeast Polk HS) was named the men’s cross country runner of the week and Jon Alberts (senior, kicker, Huntley, Ill.) was picked as the football special teams player of the week.

Sunvold won his first collegiate individual title at the Les Duke Invitational hosted by Grinnell College on Saturday. He ran the 8,000-meter race in 26 minutes, 50.9 seconds and beat the second-place finisher by 2.2 seconds. The Dutch also won the team title with 26 points at the 16-team meet.

Off for two weekends, the next race for the Dutch cross country team is set for the Dan Huston Invitational in Waverly on Saturday, October 5.

Alberts was 6-for-6 on point-after attempts for the Dutch football team in a 45-19 victory over DePauw University (Ind.) on Saturday. He also added a 41-yard field goal. Alberts has been named the special team players of the week twice already this season and seven times in his career.

Central has a bye week this Saturday and doesn’t play again until homecoming on September 28 against Loras at 1p.m. in Pella at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium.
