Two Central athletes win league honors

PELLA—Women’s cross country runner Caroline McMartin (senior, Pella), and women’s soccer goalkeeper Zoey Sizemore (freshman, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS) have received American Rivers athlete of the week honors.

McMartin was cited as the runner of the week after winning her opening race of the season Friday night at the Central Dutch Invitational. She ran the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 19.8 seconds to top the 57-runner field. Her time was 56 seconds faster than last year when she won the same race.

Central runs Saturday morning at the Les Duke Invitational in Grinnell at 11 a.m.

Sizemore was the league’s women’s soccer defensive player of the week allowing just one goal in her first 180 minutes between the pipes. She stopped five shots in a 2-0 shutout win over St. Mary’s College (Ind.). The freshmen recorded 17 saves in a 1-1 draw over perennial power Hope College (Mich.)

The Dutch (1-0-1) play at the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Minn.) Wednesday night at 4 p.m
