The Oskaloosa YMCA Aerials JO (Junior Olympic) Compulsory and Optional Teams competed on Friday, January 18th and Sunday, January 20th at the 10th annual Chow’s Winter Classic Invitational in Des Moines at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

This was the first meet of the season for the Level 7 Optional girls.  Coach Slay said, “The girls did a great job for their first meet of the season.  We know where we need to focus to improve for the next meet.”  Teammate Jensen DeJong showed up to support her team, but was unable to compete due to a knee injury.

One of the differences between the Optional and the Compulsory levels is that Optional gymnasts make up their own routines and have to complete certain difficulty requirements in order to achieve a 10.0 Start Value.  Compulsory gymnasts all perform the same routines (according to their Level) and all routines start at a 10.0.  The girls compete next at the 2013 Premier Invitational, this Friday and Saturday, February 1st and 2nd, in Omaha, NE.

Chow’s Gymnastics is famously known as the home gym of Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas.  While they did not make an appearance at the meet, Coach Chow himself was there and some of the girls were able to get their picture taken with him.
