Timely Hits Lead NM Past EV

NEW SHARON – North Mahaska received the hits when they had an opportunity Monday night to upend English Valleys 14-4 in five innings. The host Warhawks took advantage of six free passes issued by English Valleys along with five errors and pounded out 1o hits for 11 RBI to secure the final regular season home victory.

North Mahaska put up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another in the second to lead 4-0. English Valleys scored a run in the top of the third, but the wheels fell off the cart for the Bears as NM plated five runs in the fourth to jump ahead 10-1.

In the top of the fifth the Bears took advantage when Tye Ayres and Everett walked sandwiching a Luke Moore single. All three were able to score to cut the Warhawk advantage to 10-4. North Mahaska opened their half of the fifth inning with three singles to chase EV starting pitcher Myles Grove from the game. Luke Moore came in and got a fly ball out then Jack Kelderman singled. Ryan Groom’s groundout put Kelderman at third and Lucas Nunnikhoven reach on an error to score the winning run.

Dane Van Mersbergen and Nolan Andersen each drove in three runs and Groom brought in two. All 10 hits for the Warhawks were singles. Nate Sampson and Nunnikhoven each hit two singles.

Andersen picked up the mound victory going four innings allowing four runs on four hits, seven walks and three strikeouts. Nate Sampson finished up striking out one. In his one inning.

“We were hitting the ball tonight,” said NM coach Kevin Kelderman. “We ran the bases well and took advantage of our opportunities.”

There were no extra base hits in the game. Luke Moore led EV with two hits and an RBI.

North Mahaska plays at Oskaloosa tonight with junior varsity playing first at 5:30 p.m. They will open Class 1A tournament play Saturday at Twin Cedars with a 5 p.m. contest against Melcher-Dallas.
