Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s soccer team will be at home for a league tournament game for the first time in eight years after tying Mount Mercy 1-1 in double overtime of a Midwest Collegiate Conference game Saturday.

With its tie, William Penn (7-7-3, 2-3-1 MCC) has garnered the #3 seed and will again play host to the sixth-seeded Mustangs, this time in the MCC Tournament Quarterfinals next Sunday at Lacey Complex Stadium (start time TBA). The Statesmen upset MMU last year in Cedar Rapids in a penalty kick shootout.

The home tournament game is the first for the program since 2006.

Saturday’s matchup witnessed the hosts jumping out on top when Sergio Carro (Jr., London, England, Communications) scored his second goal of 2014 off a pass from Angelo Kelly (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) at the 5:02 mark. Kelly now has a team-high four assists.

The Mustangs provided an answer in the 14th minute, however, and despite a load of great chances from each team, no more goals were tallied through the remainder of regulation nor in either overtime period.

William Penn outshot Mount Mercy 20-17 in a physical outing that featured 43 fouls. Pedro Pereira (So., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Communications) was busy all evening with nine saves.
