Three Titles at Grinnell as Statesmen Split Squad

Grinnell/Pittsburg, Kan.–The William Penn women’s track and field team split up its team Saturday with some individuals heading to Kansas and others making a short trek north.

Tabitha Rogers (Fr., Venice, Calif.) was a double champion at the Grinnell Dick Young Invitational, winning the 100-meter dash in 12.95 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.44 seconds. Of note, the 100 was not actually 100 meters as the competitors were inadvertently started at the wrong line.

Carol Faye (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) joined Rogers in the 200’s top five, finishing fifth in 27.94 seconds.

The Statesmen throwers put up a considerable load of points with Phoebe Burt (Fr., Coralville, Iowa) guiding the crew as she won the discus event with a distance of 126-3. The freshman was also fourth in the shot put at 37-6.

Deriana Bryant (Jr., Woodlynne, N.J.) was a three-time top-10 placer, taking fourth in both the discus (111-7) and hammer (104-0) and sixth in the shot put (34-4.75).

Salima Omari (So., Iowa City, Iowa) was third in the shot put (37-11.5), while Taylor Washington (Sr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) ended up ninth in the discus (103-3).

As a team, WPU was fourth out of eight with 79 total points; host Grinnell claimed the crown with 158 points.

A handful of individuals also went to the Pittsburg State Tune-Up in Kansas with Danisha Washington (Sr., Peoria, Ill.) recording the best finish, taking sixth in the 100-meter dash. Her preliminary time of 12.41 was her best of the day.

Raven Williams (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) was next, placing seventh in the 200 in 26.14 seconds, while DeAvae Adderley (Fr., Nassau, Bahamas) was 11th in the event in 26.43 seconds.

Next Up: While a few individuals may qualify and compete at the Drake Relays next week, most of the Statesmen will travel to Des Moines next Friday to compete in the Grand View Viking Classic.
