The Oskaloosa Cross Country Team had their first meet of the season tonight in Williamsburg

by Michael Comfort

Varsity Boys: 3rd of 8

Varsity Girls: 8th of 11

JV Boys: 1st

JV Girls: No Team Score

I was really impressed with how we looked tonight. We’ve had three weeks of practice and with so many new runners or new runners in new roles I was looking forward to a race to see how we competed against other teams. I was really happy overall with the effort put forth from the team.

Will Roach led the Varsity Boys with a 7th place finish in a time of 18:42. “Will was not afraid and took the challenge to compete with the best in this race. He fought hard towards a top 10 finish. It set the tone for our boys and we were able to have a strong group behind him with Reid Luck, Luke, Blake, and Sam to complete our scoring. That pack of boys fought hard for the whole 3 miles. If we can continue to improve our pack each week, we can be a tough team.”

Tierney Carter led the way with a 9th place finish in the Varsity Girls race in 22:50. “Tierney ran a fantastic race for a freshman competing in her first varsity action. Just like Will she was fearless and attacked the competition. She is just now starting to scratch her potential.” Josie Adam finished 20th in a time of 24:07. “Just like Tierney, Josie is in her first varsity action as a freshman. She is an extremely gutsy runner and that propelled her to a great race today.” The girls were shorthanded due to sickness tonight. “Sarah, Kimber, and Alison really stepped up tonight to help us out”

The JV boys dominated their race placing 5 in the top 12 and winning the JV race with a score of 23 points. Lawson Morris and Elliot Nelson went 1-2. “Those two seized control of the race from the beginning and made everyone else play catch up. When the race got hard in the 3rd mile they fought hard to lead this team to a victory. I was also impressed with Javion Reeves who finished 4th and is just a freshman”

The Indians will be back in action on Saturday, Sep 3 at the Pella Dutch Invite at Central College.
