Terry Steel, 71 of New Sharon passed away Tuesday morning, December 5, 2023 at his home in New Sharon under hospice care.
Terry Lee Steel, the son of Harold and Bernice (Heaton) Steel, was born on January 8, 1952 in Mahaska County, Iowa.
Terry was a 1970 graduate of Eddyville High School.
Terry was married to Wanda Poe in 1970. To this union two children were born, Brad and Jennifer. They later divorced.
Terry had a passion for farming and began farming right out of high school helping several local farmers. He also drove truck for DRS Trucking and Circle B Trucking before starting his own trucking company in the mid 1980’s, Steel Trucking.
On January 21, 1995, Terry was united in marriage to Linda Mann Hicklin.
In 1998 Terry’s son, Brad, took over the trucking business and Terry and Linda moved to Albia where he continued to farm. They eventually moved back to New Sharon to be closer to family and Terry was able to drive truck and farm until 2020 when he retired due to health concerns.
During his time trucking, Terry was proud to have hauled for Ver Meer Manufacturing for over 50 years. Even with failing health, Terry wanted to continue to farm so he helped Russ Fynaardt for a short time.
Terry enjoyed a good conversation and loved to tell stories. He always knew somebody wherever they were going and had the gift to gab. He served on the New Sharon City Council for a few years and always looked forward to the Iowa State Fair along with the Clay County Fair. He enjoyed going on tractor rides and taking his tractor to parades. Above all, family was very important to Terry and he truly enjoyed attending every school activity, ball game or anything his grandchildren were involved in. He was also a member of the Lynnville Heart of Worship Church.
Terry’s legacy will be honored by his wife, Linda Steel of New Sharon; his children, Brad (Jenell) Steel of New Sharon, Jennifer (Tabitha Taft) Steel of Mitchellville, Aaron (Sara Jean) Hicklin of New Sharon and Jim (Jacki) Hicklin of Grinnell; his ten grandchildren, Jaimeson Hicklin, Garrett Singletary, Kassidi Steel, Makenzie Hicklin, Ashton Braack, Braden Steel, Hanna Chance, Morgan Braack, Winter Taft and Kattleya Taft; one great granddaughter, Emberlee Chance; his siblings, Rod “Harry” Steel, Dennis “Polecat” Steel, Christy Steel and Craig (Tonya) Steel along with several nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Bernice Steel; three grandsons, Jamie Hicklin, Carson Hicklin and Christian Hicklin and a sister, Heather Elswick.
A Celebration of Life/Visitation will be held Sunday December 10, 2023 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
A private burial will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills.
Memorials may be directed in the family’s name to be determined at a later time.
Holland-Coble Funeral Home of New Sharon is in charge of arrangements.
