George Daily Theatre Summer Camps 2018

OSKALOOSA, IA — In just a few weeks, it’s time to go to Summer Theatre Camp! The George Daily Youth Theatre has a packed summer full of almost anything you can imagine – musicals, games, film, secret agents, dancing, ghosts, cartoons, wizards, and more!

Summer camp kicks off the week of June 4th with “Oskalooney Tunes,” a camp that takes its cue from classic cartoons like the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. Campers will create zany, silly, and downright loony theater pieces for the showcase at the end of the week.

June also features the Ghost Hunters Film Club on June 11-15, where campers will create a series of films investigating ghost stories from Mahaska County. From June 18-22, campers will don their best disguises during Secret Agent Camp. The month ends with a camper favorite, Tales of Magic, featuring the North American School of the Magical Arts.

If June is too long to wait, the George Daily Youth Theatre is also holding a Playtesters pre-camp. Each summer brings new games and activities. Playtesters is a chance to test out the waters, see what’s new, and play a few games for a half-day.

“Putting on a theatrical production requires collaboration, critical thinking, listening, and creativity,” said Allison McGuire, one of the teachers of the summer camp. “Students test their limits in each of these areas every week. We value a camper-driven experience that is shaped by the unique group of kids that comes through each week.”

“We use games to teach a lot of theatre and life skills. Kids love Goopol, where they have to work together to steal something from the imaginary Goopol, and it’s a silent game so they have to communicate non-verbally to win,“ added Jamie Ver Steegh, an intern who works with the students.

Camp runs from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., with programming available for kindergarten through high school. At the end of each session, campers will showcase what they learned and created throughout the week for family and friends. Free, healthy lunches will be provided for all campers through the Oskaloosa Summer Lunch Program.

Each week of camp has a different theme! Registrations are accepted up to, and on, the first day of camp.
