Steven Van Maanen, 46, of rural Oskaloosa, died Saturday, January 2, 2016, of injuries received in a snowmobile accident. Steven was born on April 25, 1969, in Mahaska County, the son of Alvin and Marcia Klein Van Maanen.

Steven graduated from the Oskaloosa Senior High School with the class of 1987. After high school, he continued farming with his family. Steve loved raising cattle, and believed in being a good steward of the land. He firmly believed in passing his knowledge of agriculture on to the next generation.

On January 11, 1992, Steve was united in marriage to Valerie Richards at Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.

Steve was a long time member of Central Reformed Church, and had served on the consistory as a Deacon. He enjoyed snowmobiling, slow pitch softball, and working with his family to get animals ready for the fair. Steve enjoyed watching all sporting events and felt it was very important to attend his children’s events.

His family includes his wife, Valerie Van Maanen of Oskaloosa; three children: Kaden Van Maanen, Gerrit Van Maanen, and Leah Van Maanen, all of Oskaloosa; his parents, Alvin and Marcia Van Maanen of Oskaloosa; three siblings and their spouses: Denise (& Ronnie) Oberle of Walnut, Illinois, Mike (& Lori) Van Maanen of Centralia, Missouri, and Jeff Van Maanen (& Leslie Branham) of St. Paul, Minnesota; his mother in law, Sandra Richards of Eddyville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Brandt and Clara Van Maanen; and maternal grandparents, Lester and Edna Klein.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating.
A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 in the basement of the church.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday after 1:00 p.m. in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa and the family will be at the church from 5-8 Monday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Senior High R.C.Y.F at Central Reformed Church.
