Statesmen Tested at Missouri Valley Invite

Marshall, Mo.–The William Penn men’s wrestling team faced one of its biggest challenges of the year as it competed at the Missouri Valley Invitational Friday and Saturday.

In a tournament that many in the NAIA view as a preview for the national championship, WPU finished 33rd out of 43 teams with 18 points, while Grand View won the team crown with 230.5 points.

A trio of Statesmen earned multiple victories at the event with 285-pounder Maxwell Diaz (Jr., Miami, Fla., Sports Management) having the best showing with a pair of falls.

157-pounder Kael Bunce (Jr., Stockbridge, Mich., Mechanical Engineering) and 174-pounder Makail Stanley (So., Oreana, Ill., Biology) both finished 2-2 as well.

Jeffery Myers (Fr., Yelm, Wash., Education) and Matheson Meade (So., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science) each pinned one foe at 125 and 165 pounds, respectively, while 197-pounder Branson Bottorff (Jr., Mackinaw, Ill., Industrial Technology) also had his hand raised once.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Friday to host Indian Hills CC in an exhibition dual meet. The dual will follow the women’s meet against IHCC with an approximate start time of 7 p.m.
