Statesmen Take One of Two at Waldorf

William Penn University Athletics

Forest City–The William Penn baseball team rolled in the opener, but unfortunately produced most of its strong play in that first game as it split a non-conference doubleheader with Waldorf Tuesday.

WPU (15-14) won the first game 10-5 and then lost the second outing 10-0.

The squads were tied at 1-1 after the first frame, but slowly pulled away with four runs over the next four innings to go up 5-1 entering the bottom of the fifth.

Fabian Gutierrez (Jr., Selah, Wash., Communications) accounted for both of his team’s runs in the fifth with a double.

The Warriors (7-23) responded with two runs in the bottom half to close to 5-3. Fortunately, the Statesmen answered with five tallies in the seventh to put the game on ice. Anthony Aguila (Jr., Highland, Calif., Kinesiology), who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, managed two of those RBIs with a seventh-inning two-bagger.

Gutierrez was perfect at the dish, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Wilson Lorenzo (So., Fort Myers, Fla., Computer Science) scored three times and was one of four navy and gold batters to post two hits. The other three included Dominik Sawyer (Sr., Chula Vista, Calif., Psychology and Human Services), Jared Goodman (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif., Physical Education), and Julian Villegas (Jr., Wilmington, Calif., Sociology). Overall, WPU held a 16-9 edge in base knocks.

Jeysen Delgado (Jr., Harbor City, Calif., Kinesiology) also rounded the pads on two occasions in the win.

Dakota Herman (So., Woodland Park, Colo., Biology) ran into some trouble in the latter innings, but was sound through five frames to claim the victory. In 6 2/3 innings, the sophomore struck out six and walked four.

Despite only being outhit 7-5, the second contest did not go near as well for the Statesmen as they were blanked on the scoreboard. William Penn also struggled on the defensive end with four fielding errors that led to four unearned runs.

WC put two on the board in the first and then added four more in both the third and fourth frames.
