Statesmen Swept by Indian Hills CC in Coed Clash Exhibitions

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s and women’s wrestling teams could not take advantage of being at home as they were swept in the Coed Clash by Indian Hills CC Friday.

The women lost 29-12, while the men were defeated 32-15 by the Warriors. Per NAIA rules, dual meets against junior colleges do not count towards team records, so both duals served as exhibitions for WPU.

After neither squad fielded a grappler at 101 pounds, Rachel Cotter (Fr., Katy, Texas) earned a point for the navy and gold as she fell 13-5 to Dutchess King at 109 pounds.

The hosts came up short at 116, but then took their lone lead with back-to-back technical falls. Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) dropped Liannette Ortiz 11-0 at 123 pounds, while Mami Selemani (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Business Management) won 12-2 over Taylor Angle at 130 pounds.

IHCC recaptured the edge for good with victories at 136 and 143 pounds, while Kaylah Johnson (Fr., Houston, Texas, Biology) tallied William Penn’s final points with a 3-1 decision over Lynexa Adams at 155 pounds.

The Statesmen men also dug themselves a big hold. Trailing 22-0 after four bouts, WPU finally got on the board with a trio of wins. Kael Bunce (Jr., Stockbridge, Mich., Mechanical Engineering) started the run by pinning Blake Swearingen in 6:38 at 157 pounds.

165-pounder Matheson Meade (So., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science) then defeated Colbi Giroux 14-9 in overtime, while 174-pounder Makail Stanley (So., Oreana, Ill., Biology) held off Lucas Henderson 10-9.

The Warriors unfortunately won the final three matches of the night to secure the unofficial team win.

Next Up: The women travel to Marshall, Mo. on February 8 to compete against Waldorf and Missouri Valley in a Heart of America Athletic Conference triangular beginning at 5:30 p.m. The men will close out their home slate by hosting Iowa Wesleyan in a Heart dual next Tuesday at 7 p.m. The event will also serve as Senior Night for William Penn.
