William Penn University Athletics

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer team finished off a sweep of its own Classic with a 2-0 victory over Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) Sunday.

The Statesmen (3-3) evened their record in a game in which they outshot the visitors 24-7, but did not break through until the second half.

Leonardo Teixeira (Jr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Indian Hills CC) finally got the home squad on the board at 48:02 off a pass from Angelo Kelly (Fr., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS). The goal is his first as a William Penn player.

Victor Cruz (Jr., Elsa, Texas, Iowa Lakes CC) doubled the advantage off a pass from Brendan Johnson (Jr., Clinton, Clinton HS) in the 70th minute for his second goal of 2012.

Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, St. Francis HS) collected four saves, while Mark DeRee (Sr., Wichita, Kan., Bishop Carroll Catholic HS) made an appearance off the bench. It was his first action on a college pitch since 2008.

“I was pleased with how well we attacked and pressured today,” Head Coach Greg Jarosik said. “I am very happy we picked up two wins this weekend and hopefully we can build on this for the future.”

Next: William Penn remains at home next Saturday, hosting Northwestern in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
