Morrison, Ill.–The William Penn softball team overpowered its first foe Saturday, but ran out of muscle in splitting a pair of contests on the second and final day of the Ashford Spring Jamboree.

The Statesmen (24-13) defeated Roosevelt (Ill.) 11-3 (6 innings) and lost 5-1 to Judson (Ill.).

The navy and gold fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second versus Roosevelt, but took the lead for good with three runs in the third. Bri Zerley (Jr., Monroe, Iowa, Biology) singled home Sydney Edwards (Jr., Galesburg, Ill., Psychology & Biology) and Zerley and Jessica Christensen (So., Marysville, Wash., Sociology) came around on a one-bagger by Jorden Steele (Jr., Tacoma, Wash., Physical Education).

Brittanee Grove (Jr., Runnells, Iowa, Elementary Education) extended the lead to 6-1 with a two-run fourth-inning home run. She now has 11 roundtrippers on the year. Earlier in the frame, Malloree Grove (Sr., Runnells, Iowa, Physical Education) touched home plate on Edwards’ double.

WPU kept rolling in the fifth when Steele cleared the fences for a two-run homer (her fourth), while the game’s scoring concluded in the sixth. Christensen tripled in Brittanee and Malloree Grove and then scored herself on Zerley’s base knock.

The Statesmen outhit the Lakers 12-9 with Zerley leading the way with a 3-for-4 showing (2 RBI, 2 R). Steele was 2-for-2 with four RBIs, while Malloree Grove (2-for-3, 2 R) and Edwards (2-for-4, 2 R) also had a pair of hits. Brittanee Grove and Christensen both managed two RBIs and two runs scored as well.

Jennifer Whitehead (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) was not at her best, but still easily improved to 16-4 with help from her offense. The senior struck out six against three walks in the complete game.

William Penn swept Judson exactly two weeks ago, but failed to get the better of the Eagles the third time around. Judson scored once in the second and twice more in the fourth off starting pitcher Lunden Young (Jr., Lewiston, Idaho, Physical Education).

The Statesmen finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth when Zerley singled in Edwards. WPU loaded the bases two batters later, but failed to tally any other runs. William Penn, which was outhit 9-5, was unsuccessful in the seventh as well.

Young (4-5) managed six Ks with three BBs in the loss.

Next: With Sunday’s games being postponed, William Penn is next in action Wednesday by traveling to Des Moines to compete against Grand View in a Midwest Collegiate Conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
