Statesmen Shut Out in Win Column at Heart Duals

William Penn University Athletics

Baldwin City, Kan.–The Statesmen wrestling team failed to come away with any victories Saturday as it competed in the Heart of America Athletic Conference Duals.

William Penn (2-6), which entered the day 1-1 in league action with a prior win over Graceland and a loss to Grand View, struggled against the southern schools in the conference.

WPU opened the day with a 39-12 loss to Baker, and then fell to Missouri Valley 36-18 before losing again 36-18 to Benedictine.

Baker 39, WPU 12

125-pounder John Altieri (So., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) began the dual with a fall over Zane Baugh in a time of 4:20. Unfortunately, the Statesmen dropped five matches in a row, including a high-scoring 19-18 loss by Jeremy Walters (Sr., University Park, Ill., Exercise Science) at 165 pounds.

Austinn Goin (So., Belton, Mo., Exercise Science) added to William Penn’s tally with a 3-2 decision over Nick Moore at 174 pounds, while 184-pounder Nick Wise (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz., Exercise Science) defeated Conner Watanabe 5-0.

Missouri Valley 36, WPU 18

Altieri once again got the navy and gold off on a positive note, pinning Eric Arias at 125 pounds in 4:01. Fabian Rodriguez (So., Manassas, Va., Business Management) extended the advantage to 12-3 at 141 pounds as he won by fall against John Bindner in 4:10.

The dual turned sour quickly, however, with the Vikings winning four straight. Although it was too little and too late, Wise earned his squad six more points by pinning fellow 184-pounder Nicholas Whitehead in 6:33.

Benedictine 36, WPU 18

Altieri’s forfeit put WPU up 6-0 after one match, but the theme of the day continued with the Ravens claiming the next six bouts. Wise matched Altieri’s perfect day by pinning Cameron Bruce in 2:31, while 197-pounder Dane Jones (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sociology) heard the sound of a slapped mat as he pinned Ethan Vistro in a time of 1:45.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. next Sunday to compete in the Missouri Valley Open.
