Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer team battled well with #13 Central Methodist Saturday, but a short lapse doomed the team in 2-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference setback.

WPU (9-6-1, 5-5 Heart) was outshot just 12-9, including three by Eduardo Bonatto (Fr., Rio Grande, Brazil, Business Management), but could not get on the board.

The teams entered halftime in a scoreless tie, but the Eagles (11-2-2, 7-1-2 Heart) broke through at the 47:17 mark and then doubled the advantage just 45 seconds later.

With thunderstorms moving into the area at any time, the Statesmen had a strong sense of urgency and peppered the CMU goalkeeper with numerous second-half chances. Unfortunately, they could not finish, and in the end Mother Nature won out as the game was called with eight minutes remaining.

Guillermo Pineda (Fr., Madrid, Spain, Business Management & Communications) kept the navy and gold in the contest with four saves.

“We showed again that we can compete with the nation’s best,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We still need to limit our individual mistakes and focus at all times. We will learn from today and improve for a big game on Wednesday.”

Next Up: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa next Wednesday to host Mount Mercy in Heart action at 7:30 p.m.
