Statesmen Short in Comeback Try Against Waldorf

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer team battled back in the second half, but not far enough in falling 2-1 to Waldorf in non-conference action Wednesday.

The Statesmen (4-6), who were outshot 18-13, played even with the Warriors until late in the first half. Waldorf (2-8) finally got on the board in the 36th minute and added the difference-maker at the 42:38 mark to make it 2-0 entering halftime.

The hosts eventually cut the deficit in half in the 76th minute when a pass from Mark Dryden (Jr., Arbroath, Scotland, Biology) was slipped past the goalkeeper by Angelo Kelly (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education). Kelly tied for the team lead with his second score, while Dryden and Kelly each have a squad-best two assists.

Waseem Vahed (Fr., Lenasia, South Africa, Undecided) paced the offense with four shots, and Mason Bandy (So., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) recorded three saves.

Next: William Penn travels to La Crosse, Wis. Saturday to face Viterbo in Midwest Collegiate Conference action at 3 p.m.
