Statesmen Play to Another Scoreless Tie
Parkville, Mo.–For the third time this season, the William Penn men’s soccer team finished a game with neither team scoring as it tied Park 0-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Saturday.
No. 9 WPU (4-0-5, 2-0-3 Heart) was mostly content with the result, due to the fact that it was playing a man down for over 55 minutes. Despite that, the visitors were only outshot 18-12, including just 5-4 in shots on goal.
The Pirates (5-1-1, 3-1-1 Heart) failed to get anything past the navy and gold defense, led by Sil Milder (Fr., Arnhem, Netherlands, Sports Management) with five saves.
Jarred Hendricks (Sr., Cape Town, South Africa, Exercise Science) headlined the offensive effort with four shots, while Jedin Lee (Jr., Durban, South Africa, Sports Management) added two more. The navy and gold held a 7-4 advantage in attempts in the opening half, but lost Leonardo Jimenez (So., Mexico City, Mexico, Business Management) to a red card at the 34:36 mark.
William Penn’s defense put on a show after intermission, fighting off 14 PU attempts in the second stanza.
“We are happy with the performance once we were down to 10 men, but we cannot be happy with our performance in the first 30 minutes,” Head Coach Joe Minton said. “All of the hard work we had done, and all the effort we had been giving in games was just not there, and that is what’s frustrating.”
“We will take the point, very begrudgingly, and hope we can start winning these games that matter,” Minton added.
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Saturday to host Central Methodist in Heart play at 4:30 p.m.
