Statesmen Hit Lanes Twice in Pre-Holiday Events

Las Vegas, Nev.–The William Penn men’s bowling team competed well in two big tournaments in Nevada this week.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Statesmen placed 12th out of 36 teams at the Las Vegas Collegiate Shootout. Then, on Wednesday and Thursday, the navy and gold took 13th place out of 35 teams at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational.

At the Shootout, William Penn tallied 10,282 pins, while Wichita State (Kan.) was first with 11,574 pins. The event was comprised of six regular games and four sets of Bakers.

Nick Kruml of Wisconsin-Whitewater was the top individual with a 215.0 average (1,290 pins).

Cameron Foster (Jr., West Jordan, Utah, Business Management) was the best Statesmen roller by placing sixth out of 274 bowlers with a 207.8 average (1,247 pins).

Jacques Kaune (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management), with a 186.0 mark, and Drew Balta (Jr., Walford, Iowa, Education), with a 174.7 clip, also started all six games.

Conan Mackey (So., Bray, Ireland, Public Accounting) started five games with a 184.8 average, while Piet Schaeffer (Jr., Livingston, Scotland, General Mathematics) averaged 186.8 pins in four games.

Brandon Barboza (So., Brick, N.J., Sociology) was strong in two games (214.0 avg.), while Kyle Clark (Jr., Aurora, Ill., Physical Education) knocked down 161 pins in his only game.

The Statesmen managed 8,562 pins at the nine-game Glenn Carlson tourney, while Webber International (Fla.) earned the top spot with 9,423 pins. Fourth-seeded Midland (Neb.) knocked off the top seed in the semifinals of bracket play, however, and eventually won the title with a 3-1 victory over #3 seed Calumet-St. Joseph (Ind.).

Colin Champion of Webber International was the individual winner with a 218.6 average (1,967 pins). Foster was again in the top ten, finishing tenth out of 224 bowlers with a 206.9 average (1,862 pins).

Mackey was next with a 197.7 clip, while Balta averaged 182.2 pins. Both players also started all nine games.

Kaune owned a 177.3 mark in eight games and Barboza posted a 191.9 average in seven games. Schaeffer’s 171.0 clip (two games) and Clark’s 182 in his lone game concluded the team’s scoring.

Next: William Penn is off until after school resumes, traveling to Addison, Ill. for the Robert Morris Baker Challenge on January 12-13.
