Statesmen Held Off Scoreboard by Pirates
Parkville, Mo.–The William Penn women’s soccer team failed to find an equalizer Saturday as it fell to Park 1-0 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup.
WPU (5-3-1, 2-2-1 Heart) was outshot 18-8 by the Pirates (2-5-1, 2-2-1 Heart), including a 9-5 deficit in shots on goal.
PU recorded the game’s only goal in the 14th minute, and then its defense kept the lead the remainder of the day.
Heidi Gill (Buncrana, Ireland, Undecided) was by far William Penn’s best offensive threat, posting four shots (all on goal), including a pair of attempts in the final three minutes of the contest.
Emma Billings (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Psychology) was busy behind the pipes as her eight saves kept the navy and gold in the contest.
“We really struggled in the first 45 minutes of the match, coming out a bit timid and then trying to play to catch up,” Head Coach Kaleb Preston said. “We were also lacking ideas going forward today. I think we will benefit from a week of training.”
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Saturday to host Central Methodist in Heart play at 2 p.m.
