Topeka, Kan.–The William Penn Baseball Team continued its winning ways, taking two of three during a triple header with Mount Marty.

WPU (8-1) dropped game one of the series in a high scoring affair, 17-12, but bounced back and grabbed the final two games by the scores of 7-5 and 11-10.

The navy and gold were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when they plated five runs. Unfortunately for them, the lead was short-lived as MMC scored 10 in the top of the sixth and it proved to be enough to hold off the Statesmen bats.

William Penn was led at the plate by Nathan Ball (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash., Psychology) who finished 2-2 with a home run, four RBI’s, and three runs scored. Boston Romero (Sr., Fairfield, Calif., Sociology) was also perfect at the plate notching three hits in three at-bats and came around to score three times. Three other Statesmen hitters posted multi-hit performances with Seth Reisbeck (Sr., Meridian, Idaho, History/Government) and Blaze Speas (Sr., O’Fallon, Mo., Wellness and Recreation) finishing 2-4, and Tanner Bedier (Fr., Bondurant, Iowa, Business management) going 2-3.

Lionel Colon (Jr., Puerto Real, P.R., Business Management) started game two on the bump for WPU and threw 5.2 innings pitched, gave up five earned runs, while striking out six. Colon was cruising through four innings but began to run into trouble in the fifth when the Lancers plated three runs.

The Statesmen trailed 5-4 entering the final frame but scored three runs in the top of the seventh to gain a 7-5 edge. Stetson Denning (Fr., Queen Creek, Ariz., Sports Management) shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to give William Penn its seventh victory of the season.

Zach Edgar (Jr., Elgin, Ill., Business Management) finished 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Speas contributed a knock with a pair of RBI’s while Romero added a triple, RBI, and crossed the plate twice in three at-bats.

WPU 11, MMC 10

The rubber match of the three-game set was a back and forth offensive battle but ultimately William Penn came out victorious to grab its eighth victory of the season.

WPU gained an 8-5 advantage over the Lancers in the bottom of the fifth but MMC rallied back the following half-inning with a four-run inning to grab a 9-8 lead. In the bottom half of the sixth, William Penn regained the lead by plating a pair of runs. Down to its final at-bats, Mount Marty tied the game in the top of the seventh, but the Statesmen rose to the occasion in the bottom half when Speas singled home the game-winning run in walk-off fashion to give his team the win.

Speas finished the game 3-5, three RBI’s, and a run scored to lead William Penn offensively. Anthony Huggins (So., Davenport, Fla., Biology) also had a multi-hit performance going 2-3 with a pair of RBI’s.
