Dayton, Ohio–The William Penn men’s bowling team put up a good fight, but could not reach its goal of national supremacy as it owned a 1-2 record at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships Thursday and Friday.

WPU qualified eighth out of 16 teams with 4,712 pins in 24 games. Wichita State (Kan.) paced the field with 5,028 pins.

The Statesmen were demoted to the consolation bracket right away, however, with a 4-3 setback to #9 seed Wisconsin-Whitewater.

A good night’s rest helped the navy and gold as they responded with an early-morning 4-2 upset of top-seeded Wichita State to eliminate the Shockers. Unfortunately, the trip to nationals was cut shorter than the squad had hoped in the fourth overall round with a 4-3 setback to #5 seed Webber International.

Team members included David Decker (Jr.., Peyton, Colo., Physical Education), Aleksander Kostric (So., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), Rok Kostric (So., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), Albert Liggins (Fr., Ravanel, S.C.), Curtis Majka (Sr., Elgin, Ill., Mechanical Engineering), Logan Mason (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management), Jayson Miner (Fr., Silvis, Ill., Physical Education), and Nick Walker (Sr., Zeeland, Mich., Business Management).

The tournament ends the collegiate careers of seniors Majka, Mason, and Walker.
