Statesmen Fall to #10 Missouri Valley in First Loss of the Season
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s soccer team came up short for the first loss of the season, falling 3-1 to #10 Missouri Valley in Heart of America Athletic play Saturday.
#6 WPU (11-1-1, 5-1 Heart) led the shot count with 16 attempts compared to 11 for the Vikings (9-1-1, 6-0 Heart)
Despite recording 11 shots in the first half, William Penn failed to put a goal on the scoreboard.
Unfortunately, MVC took the lead in the second half with the match’s first goal.
Off a pass from Timothy King (Sr., London, England, Biology), Hugo Cornish (So., Sydney, Australia, Business Management) leveled the score at the 67:03 mark. Cornish delivered a strike from just inside the sideline, threading the ball into the back of the net.
Thirteen minutes later, the Vikings reclaimed the lead and sealed the match with a third goal in the closing stages.
Connor O’Reilly (Sr., Letterkenny, Ireland, General Accounting) contributed four shots to William Penn’s tally, while Albert Feixas (Fr., Santa Coloma de Farners, Spain, Exercise Science) and Cornish added three apiece.
“Missouri Valley are so ruthless in front of the goal, and we didn’t manage to make the big moments of the game,” said Head Coach Simon Brown. “Hopefully, we get an opportunity to play them again in conference playoffs to show a better account of ourselves.”
