Statesmen Fall 2-0 Against Culver-Stockton
Oskaloosa— The William Penn Esports team is still in search for its first win of the year as it fell 2-0 to Culver-Stockton in Heart of America Athletic Conference Super Smash Bros Ultimate action Tuesday.
WPU (0-7) rolled with the trio of Brandon Thordarson (Sr., Bloomfield, Iowa), Brady Burge (Fr., Van Horne, Iowa) and Jayden Comstock (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa), just as they have all season.
GAME 1
Thordarson started Round One on Mii Brawler, facing off against Culver-Stockton’s No. 1 player, who was playing as Roy. Thordarson started the match strong, taking an early stock from Culver-Stockton. Unfortunately, C-SC responded quickly, ending the first matchup with only two stocks lost.
In the second round, WPU sent out Burge on Pyra and Mythra. Burge was able to take down Culver-Stockton’s No. 1, but was knocked down to one stock in the process. Culver-Stockton then sent out its No. 2 on Bowser. Burge could not get it going against Bowser, and lost his final stock.
Comstock was sent as WPUs final competitor on his classic Donkey Kong. Comstock was able to gain some momentum, knocking one stock off, but Bower proved to be to much as he fell shortly after, putting WPU down 1-0.
GAME 2
WPU switched up the order as this time it sent out Burge as its No.1 on Pyra and Mythra. Burge was able to find success against Culver-Stockton’s No. 1 on Cora, knocking all three stocks off, while only losing one of his own.
C-SC No. 2 was sent out on Donkey Kong, and unfortunately Burge was unable to find the same success. He knocked one stock off Donkey Kong before losing both of his remaining stocks.
WPU struggled to find answers for Culver-Stockton’s Donkey Kong as Thordarson was sent out next on Mii Brawler, but was only claimed one stock off before falling.
Comstock, again using Donkey Kong, just like Thordarson as he was unable to defeat the C-SC Donkey Kong.
“This was our best game of the season, but we couldn’t quite get past their Donkey Kong tonight,” Head Coach Austin Fagen-Scholes said. “I am really proud of our battle, but came up a little short tonight. We now look forward to Baker to bounce back against.”
