Statesmen Drop First MCC Test

Des Moines–The William Penn women’s basketball team dug itself an early hole in the Midwest Collegiate Conference standings with an 80-58 loss to Grand View Wednesday.
WPU (6-10, 0-1 MCC) came out determined to get the road ‘W’ with a 21-14 lead, but the Vikings (5-12, 1-0 MCC) closed out the half on an 11-5 run to go up 38-35 at intermission. The visitors actually held a 46.7%-45.5% shooting advantage at that juncture.
The navy and gold remained close in the early moments of the second half, cutting the deficit to one at 44-43. Unfortunately, GVU produced 16 of the next 17 points and cruised the remainder of the way.
In the end, the teams went in opposite directions after intermission with the Statesmen eventually being outshot 52.5%-35.0%. They also lost the rebounding battle 39-31 and had four more turnovers (17-13). All of that was just too much to overcome.
Katie Golomski (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology & Sociology) knocked down four three-pointers en route to matching Janay Pritchett (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) with a team-high 14 points.
Alyssa Phillips (So., Gurnee, Ill., Communications) reached double figures as well with 12 points and Jessie Kreuser (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Physical Education) finished with nine in addition to three blocks.
Golomski and Phillips both recorded seven rebounds, while Kadejah Young (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn., Physical Education) managed four assists with a trio of steals.
