Statesmen Begin Spring in Texas

Longview, Texas–The William Penn men’s golf team began its spring season out of state Monday and Tuesday as it competed in the FST Invitational hosted by LeTourneau.

WPU finished 11th out of 12 teams with a three-round score of 923 (303-302-318) at the par-72 Pinecrest Country Club. Southwestern (Texas) topped the standings at 874 (286-292-296).

Southwestern had the top two linksters with Ethan Bridges defeating teammate Mathew Peesker in a one-hole playoff. Bridges finished at 214 (65-76-73) to be the best out of 78 golfers in the field.

In a different format than normal, teams were allowed to have six golfers with the top four being used for the squad score.

Luke Galeazzi (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) headlined William Penn’s efforts as he tied for 25th at 227 (75-72-80). Right behind him was Austin Hafner (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management), who tied for 32nd at 229 (76-75-78), while Andon Herrera (Fr., Katy, Texas, Business Management) was also in the mix at 230 (76-74-80) to tie for 35th.

Trace White (Sr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Physical Education (K-12)), in a tie for 50th at 237 (76-81-80), and Francois Assaud (Jr., Montelimar, France, Sports Management), in a tie for 68th (82-81-81-244), completed the varsity lineup.

Jonathan Jarvis (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) also hit the links as an individual and scored a 251 (86-82-83).

“This was a good test for the first tournament of the spring,” Head Coach Elise Warne said. “We came out hot, but ultimately ran out of gas. There were a lot of positives, though, including Luke Galeazzi posting his best score of the year. We have a lot of talent, but that did not translate to our score. We will take a lot of lessons from this and look forward to our next tournament in Kentucky.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Nicholasville, Ky. on Monday and Tuesday, March 25-26 to compete in the Garn Championship. Play will be contested at Keene Trace Golf Course.
