Spring Is For Football?

Spring football practice is under way for the William Penn Statesmen

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Spring is for football? That’s the impression I’ve had recently since the Iowa Barnstormers held their spring training camp in Oskaloosa. That one instance isn’t enough to call spring as football season just yet. Yes, Arena Football and the Iowa Barnstormers are now in full swing, and a recently discovered gem in the Pella Knights, a semi-pro football team based out of Pella, Iowa.

But walking out onto the field of the New Community Stadium to the sounds of shoulder pad versus shoulder pad made it seem like football season for real, but I would be getting ahead of myself now.

Spring time brings just a few days of practice time allotted to the team. “We get 15 days, and we go Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday for two weeks,” said William Penn Statesmen Head Coach Todd Hafner.

The Easter break gives the players some time off, but they will be going 3 days in row to work around the scheduling conflict.

“Our spring game is April 14th [Saturday] at 10 in the morning.” Hafner said about the finale to the spring practice session.

After last years successful year, I posed the question to Hafner about what the outlook for next season is. “We’ve got a great group of kids. That’s the biggest thing for us right now, is, our off season’s been phenomenal and our kids have gotten a lot stronger. We scrimmaged last Saturday, and the speed of the game is… it’s just fast. You think your going to get a 20 yard run, and you get tackled for 10 because the defensive guys are there. You think your not going to have anything [Offense] and somebody makes a move and goes for ten to fifteen yards. There’s a lot of speed on both sides of ball.”

“We return a lot of players which obviously helps. The outlook is good. We’ve got to stay healthy and once we’re done with spring football we’ve got to have a good summer. But I think if everything goes as planned, we should have a good football team.”
