Oskaloosa, Iowa – As part of the NAIA’s Champions of Character initiative, several members from William Penn’s softball team helped raise funds and collect food as part of a University-wide food drive last month.

WPU’s Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society spearheaded the drive with help from several other organizations.

“We figured why have several small food drives when we can get all of these organizations together for one big drive,” ALD sponsor Sue Van Wyk said. “I believe we made a big difference.”

In toll, the groups, paced by the Lady Statesmen softball team, collected 1,650 pounds of canned food and $217 of donations. The money was divided up between the women’s shelter and the Ecumenical Cupboard, both in Oskaloosa.

Fareway Stores also matched all of the donations received from 9 a.m.-noon on November 10, allowing for a tally of nearly 2,000 pounds of canned goods to be collected.

“This was a great activity and something we were all so proud to have been a part of it,” Softball player Aylissa Tyler said.
